I added the sites to the Bookmarks Toolbar as a substitute. You should be able to click and get the entire thing highlighted and with no need to backspace. When you see the page you want, just click on it or use the up and down arrows on your keyboard to highlight it and then press EnterReturn. You will notice that Firefox changes the list of suggestions from "top sites" to "most visited".
